Abstract

In this paper, we chronologically reviewed many of Gunderson¡¯s studies concerning patients with borderline personality disorder. The concept of borderline personality disorder described by Gunderson comes from the same observations made by others. He began conducting systematic and scientific studies of the symptoms of borderline personality disorder, attempted to reorganize the concept of borderline personality disorder, and made a substantial contribution to the establishment of diagnostic criteria for borderline personality disorder in DSM. He also tried to integrate psychodynamic theories and developmental researches and proposed a more comprehensible psychodynamic formulation. He especially proposed 3 levels of ego function of borderline patients in different interpersonal situations in an effort to help them overcome their deeply rooted loneliness and emptiness. Gunderson¡¯s scientific efforts resulted in the development of various and more effective treatment modalities. His work might be of great assistance in further studies concerning borderline personality disorders, and in gaining a deeper understanding of patients with borderline personality disorder.
